Cottonwood balm is ancient medicine for modern times.Ithas been used by Native Americans and Europeans for millennia. It is often referred to as "Balm of Gilead."
Balm of Gilead has been believed by some to “Ease the plight of the broken-hearted, bring peace to the home, and to ease problems caused by jealous co-workers and false friends.”
Practically speaking however, it is a serious topical pain reliever for sore muscles, joints and inflammation. The salicylates found in cottonwood are relatives of aspirin. It is also anti-microbial, anti-fungal and stimulates skin growth such as for burns and bruises. These properties give the cottonwood balm a huge range of uses including soothing dry skin. And of course there is the sweet honey-like aroma of cottonwood.
This was a recent customer review: "This is THE BEST Cottonwood Balm EVER, I would NEVER find myself without it.It works immediately to take away sore joints, achy muscles and neck pain. There is lots of love in this balm."
The black cottonwood trees native to the Northwest are the largest and tallest of all the poplar species. Its big sticky buds are highly desirable for natural healing balms, salves, face cream and body butter. My husband and I collect the native black cottonwood buds in the late fall and early winter from recently fallen branches.
I infuse twice the normal amount of the resinous buds into organic olive oil at controlled temperatures over a period of many weeks.I do this to ensure good results.I do not add vitamin E as the buds themselves are antioxidants which prevent spoilage. And I do not use dried buds as they are much less effective than the fresh or fresh frozen buds I use in my products.
Mixed with beeswax the resulting pain relieving balm is a true pleasure to apply to those aching muscles, joints and things that hurt.
